Messaging - Privileges

Messaging permissions define what users can view and manage within the Messaging module. Administrators can configure these privileges under: Manage Permissions > Access Groups

There are three messaging related privileges.

Chat User

The Chat User permission provides basic access to the messaging system, including direct messages and limited channel interaction.

What This Permission Allows

  • Access to Chat interface

  • Send and receive Direct Messages (DMs)

  • Participate in Group Messages

Channel Access Behavior

  • Channels are read-only by default

  • Users can:

    • View messages in channels

    • Stay informed on updates

  • Users cannot send messages in channels unless additional permissions are granted

Chat: Channel Sending Access

The Channel Sending Access permission extends chat capabilities by allowing users to actively participate in channels.

What This Permission Allows

  • Send messages in Channels

  • Reply, interact, and engage in channel conversations

  • Participate fully in team or organization-wide discussions

Dependency

  • Requires Chat User permission to be effective

Chat: Enable Direct Messages

The Enable Direct Messages permission controls whether users can initiate and participate in one-on-one and group conversations.

Users without this permission retain access to chat channels based on their other chat permissions but cannot send direct messages or create group conversations.

What This Permission Allows

  • Send direct messages to other users.

  • Start new one-on-one conversations.

  • Create and participate in group conversations.

  • Send messages in existing direct message and group conversations.

What Happens Without This Permission

Users without this permission can:

  • View public and private channels they have access to.

  • Read channel conversations (based on their channel permissions).

Users without this permission cannot:

  • Send direct messages.

  • Start new direct message conversations.

  • Create new group conversations.

  • Send messages in existing direct message or group conversations.

If a user attempts to send a direct message or group message without this permission, the action will be denied.

Manage Chat Integration (Admin)

The Manage Chat Integration permission provides administrative control over chat configurations and integrations.

What This Permission Allows

  • Manage Chat Integrations and deletions

  • Create and manage Channels

  • Configure messaging-related settings at an organizational level

Access Level

  • Typically restricted to Admins or designated power users
